Delhi Metro Completes Tunneling at Tughlakabad Railway Colony on Golden Line Phase IV

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has successfully completed another 792-meter underground crucial tunnel between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlakabad Railway Colony station on the upcoming Golden Line of the Phase IV extension project, it is a part of the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor.

Golden Line Tunnel Work Reaches New Heights

This golden line tunnel breakthrough was achieved by using a 96-meter-long Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which appeared at Tughlakabad Railway Colony station in front of the Health and Transport Cabinet Minister of Delhi Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh and DMRC Managing Director Dr. Vikas Kumar. This tunnel will be for up and down movement, which is one of the two parallel tunnels. While the second tunnel breakthrough is expected by July 2025.

This new tunnel between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlakabad Railway Colony station was constructed at an average depth of 18 meters, using 566 precast concrete rings with an inner diameter of 5.8 meters. Excavation was done using Earth Pressure Balancing Method and the surface disruptions were kept to a minimum. The concrete segments were manufactured at DMRC’s mechanized casting yard in Mundka and steam-cured for early strength.

Use of Modern Technology and Skilled Workforce

DMRC highlighted that advanced monitoring systems were employed to measure ground movements during construction and these measured movements ensured that adjacent structures were not jeopardized.

The Golden Line Phase IV, spanning 23.62 km with 19 km underground, expected to be operational by mid-2026. It will feature 15 stations and offer 4 key interchanges, including connections to the Magenta, Airport Express, Yellow and Violet Lines.

Delhi Metro achieved its second Tunneling breakthrough, it not only highlights the engineering capability of DMRC but also reinforces its commitment to expand sustainable urban transport in Delhi. As Dr. Singh noted, “This milestone reflects our dedication to delivering world-class infrastructure and easing urban mobility for Delhiites.”
