The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to introduce India’s first three-coach train corridor on the upcoming Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block route as part of its Phase IV expansion. This 8-kilometer new corridor, featuring with 8 stations, will be the second-shortest line in the Delhi Metro network after the Grey Line. It is estimated that 80,000 passengers will use this metro service daily.
India’s First Three-Coach Train Line
Unlike traditional metro lines that run with 4, 6, or 8 coaches, this new corridor will feature “three-coach trains“, specifically designed for short-distance urban travel. The DMRC conducted a passenger flow study which proved this train configuration will improve operational efficiency along with its cost-effectiveness without compromising passenger comfort.
Each coach will accommodate around 300 passengers, bringing the total capacity of a 3-Coach Train to approximately 900 passengers per trip. This new route will connect two major existing interchange stations, thereby acting as an efficient transport option for busy hubs like ‘Lajpat Nagar Market’ and ‘Select Citywalk Mall’.
Route Length & Key Features
The elevated metro corridor will span 8 kilometers and include 8 stations from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block, making it Delhi’s Second Smallest Metro corridor after the Grey Line (Dwarka–Dhansa Bus Stand).
Smaller Platforms: Unlike standard metro platforms that are 140 meters long, those on this new route will be 74 meters length, specifically designed for three-coach train operations.
Optimized Energy Usage: DMRC states that three-coach trains will consume less electricity, offering an environmentally friendly commuting option.
Connectivity: Smooth and easy interchange with existing metro corridors to enhance last-mile connectivity in South Delhi.
When will Construction Begin?
The DMRC began the tender process in January and the foundation stone for this project was laid in March 2024. The project is anticipated to be finalized by 2028, with shorter platforms and 3-coach trains helping in reducing construction and operational costs.

Passenger Capacity & Future Estimates
The passenger capacity of each metro coach will be 300, meaning a three-coach train will be able to carry 900 passengers per trip. By 2041, the daily ridership on this new corridor is projected to reach 120,000 passengers, with metro frequency increasing as demand grows.
Metro Stations & Benefits
This new corridor will link key areas, offering improved connectivity for Residential and Commercial hubs:
- Lajpat Nagar– Interchange with Pink & Violet lines; third corridor connecting Lajpat Nagar Market.
- Andrews Ganj– Connects Residential & Institutional zones.
- Greater Kailash-I– Serves residents in GK and surrounding areas.
- Chirag Delhi– Interchange with Magenta Line.
- Pushpa Bhavan – Connects Government offices & Residential colonies.
- Saket Court– Links Saket District Court & Select Citywalk Mall.
- Pushp Vihar– Connects Pushp Vihar sectors 1, 3, 4, and 7.
- Saket G Block– Interchange with Golden Line (Tughlakabad–Aerocity), allowing direct Airport access via Metro.
DMRC says that, with this shorter and more efficient metro train route, the 3-coach metro system aims to enhance urban travel, reduce congestion, and offer a cost-effective alternative for Delhi’s Commuters. The South & Central Delhi commute will improve significantly, making travel easier and more sustainable. With the continued expansion of the Delhi Metro, this three coach train corridor is expected to set a precedent for future metro developments across India.
