IIT Delhi Sets Up Metro Tunnel Training & Research Center

IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Delhi progressed infrastructure development and urban mobility through establishing the Metro Tunnel Training & Research Center. Three years after the agreement, the Delhi Metro Tunnel Training Excellence Centre was established at IIT-BHU. The facility at the DMRC Academy was inaugurated, featuring smart classrooms, VR labs, and a true-scale tunnel model.

A Collaborative Approach

In collaboration with IIT-BHU, a Center of Excellence in Tunneling and Tunnel Training has been set up in New Delhi for Metro Station Tunnel design. The institute had entered into this agreement 3 years ago.

The building was inaugurated at the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Academy in Shastri Park, Delhi.

IIT-BHU will now provide technical training in underground space and tunnel design. This state-of-the-art facility aims to bring research into practical application. Across the country, approximately 1,000 kilometers of metro tunnels, worth ₹1 lakh crore, are to be constructed.

Under this initiative, professors and scientists from the Civil Engineering Department and other units at IIT-BHU will conduct research on spatial technology for Delhi Metro’s tunneling. The agreement for this initiative was signed between DMRC and IIT-BHU 3 years ago.

Metro Tunnel Training Agreement Signed in 2022

On July 31, 2022, IIT-BHU and DMRC formalized an agreement focusing on tunnel construction and underground engineering. It was decided to initiate research to involve young talent, along with plans for various recruitments and related courses.

Research on Construction Technology and Safety Protocols

To fulfill the increasing demands in urban infrastructure projects, DMRC will collaborate with IIT-BHU for academic excellence & approach future constructions for tunnel design, construction technology, safety norms and workforce training.

The institute boasts several state-of-the-art facilities such as smart classrooms, smart labs both real and virtual with AR/VR as well a 25 meter full scale tunnel model for training purposes.

For IIT Delhi, the tunnel facility initiative is not just about constructing tunnels, but sets the stage for the future of urban mobility one breakthrough at a time. As a research based educational and workforce partner the Metro Tunnel Training and Research Center (MTTRC) is poised to become a global leader internationally in metro tunnel technology and transforming the way cities move and progress.
